■ 2007 April Semester Begins!

The April semester of the new school year has commenced on 4/9 (Mon). More students enroll at this time of the year than any other times. The following is a digest of the orientation ceremony.

The freshman students from China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong gathered at Shinjuku Japanese Language Institute (SNG) on April 5, Thursday. With our teachers present, an orientation was held to explain to students about their upcoming life overseas. An SNG graduate from Hong Kong who has enrolled in a professional school came to help us translate for the new students who were not yet fluent in Japanese.

I can’t help but try to get a laugh from the radiating, thrilled freshman students. It’s become almost a routine: “Hello, I’m the Takuya Kimura (sometimes Jyo Odagiri) of SNG” to which our school manager sharply adds, “You mean Doraemon.” We are not sure why we perform a comic skit. The orientation discussed the school, everyday life, and disaster prevention issues.
The following day, April 5 (Fri), we held an orientation for the freshman students from Korea. Staff members from our Korea office came to help translate for which we are fortunate. Hats off to them for their amazing ability to lead the large group of students in the orientation. Once again, this is where I tried to get a laugh from the crowd. With newly added action to my usual jokes, I got a reasonable laugh from the freshmen. 3 minutes of preparation, a lifetime devotion to comedy. I believe it is important for teachers to have an entertaining and hospitable spirit.

So this marked off the beginning of the April semester with a large number of freshman students, in addition to those continuing education from last year. Even though most of the new students cannot speak Japanese fluently, by next year they’ll be able to (hopefully).

■ Japanese Teacher Training Program also began!

Foreign students aren’t the only ones to study Japanese at SNG.“Japanese Teacher Training Program (800 hour course)”intended for those looking to become a Japanese teacher, also started.

At SNG, foreign students learn Japanese using our original method, the Ezoe teaching methods. And to train those students who’ve mastered the Ezoe teaching methods to become a Japanese teacher, we offer our“Japanese Teacher Training Program (800 hour course)” starting every April.
About 10 students applied to the Japanese Teacher Training Program this year. They will study for one year, a total of 800 hours. It is time consuming, but our program includes OJT, shows how to create teaching materials, and teaches how to use IT apparatus. Furthermore, students learn up-to-date circumstances regarding further education for foreign students, and acquire broad skills that can be immediately used in the teaching fields. Best wishes with your school year!

■ Other special classes!

During the spring break, just before the commencement of the spring semester, a special math class was held for students looking to pursue further education. A pen/pencil writing class was also held for Japanese teachers.

Around 50 SNG students go on to colleges/universities or graduate schools (about 100 students enroll in specialty schools). A math syllabus in line with the “Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU),” a vital exam in applying to a school, was created with which a “special math class” was offered during the spring break. 20 students came (on their own accord). They studied for one week. Because they were SNG students, the class was offered free of charge.
Our vice principal taught the pen/pencil writing class for Japanese teachers. Of course students are welcome to participate as well, but the picture below shows just one student in the class.

Currently studying math. Relax, concentrate. Beautiful letters, nice smiles.
