■ Orientation for continuing
 education by SNG graduates who
 went to universities, graduate
 schools and professional schools!

On 5/19 (Sat), an orientation was held by SNG graduates who went on to universities, graduate schools, and professional schools, for current SNG students to get advice on pursuing further education.

On May 19 (Saturday), an orientation on continuing education was held by inviting SNG graduates to the school. This session has become an annual event. The orientation was held 2 weeks earlier than last year’s, and the number of attending graduates was doubled to 10 students. The aim was to prepare SNG students for the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU) in June, to inform them of various ways to pursue further education, and to have them really start thinking about their future. To fulfill this aim, we asked SNG graduates from various schools to come speak to us.

Perhaps it was because SNG graduates who went on to a variety of schools (graduate schools, universities, professional schools), with a variety of majors, in addition to various nationalities and ways they were accepted, that 40 students came to attend the orientation. The orientation was 2 hours: SNG graduates spoke to the current students for the first hour, after which groups were formed to hold small group-talk sessions for the second hour. 2 hours went by quickly!
The 4 sophomores that came were now quite fluent in Japanese. I bet our current students were stunned. Students were able to converse in their respective mother tongues during the group talk sessions so they were able to ask about whatever concerns they had. I think we offered a great orientation session prior to the starting of various orientations and open campuses at Japanese universities and schools.

■ Special classes held during
   Golden Week!

Special classes on kanji and Japanese conversation were held on May 3 and 4. As it was during Golden Week, students enjoyed something a bit different from their usual classes.

Though it’s Golden Week, for students who just got to Japan in April, a few days off from school could be a disappointment. After thinking, “There must be students who want to improve their Japanese as soon as possible,” “It is a long-term vacation but maybe some students don’t have any plans for the break,” and “Maybe some students want something different,” we decided again to offer special classes for GW. The class schedule is as follows.

■ May 3 (Thu)/4 (Fri)
9:10〜10:50

Kanji
class

Introduce the compositions and meanings of different kanji characters, teach differences between similar kanjis.
11:00〜12:40
Conversation
class
Role plays: Inviting friends to dinner, conversation inside the restaurant, giving directions. Presentations at the end

About 10 students attended the kanji class, and 50 attended the conversation class. Students from different classes met and worked together. It was quite a scene to see these students write dialogues with, and teach kanji to other classmates. Even our teachers played new and different roles, those they usually do not take in their own regular classes, which was also an excitement for us.
“Look! That teacher is acting out that part!” This was the kind of fun students had.
