Originally the kanji for "4" or "4 things" was a picture of four horizontal lines, derived from the shape of the kanji for "1" or "1 thing". However, in order to avoid the confusion that a combination of kanji made up out of independent strokes could lead to, the ancient kanji for "mouth" which bore the same pronunciation as "4" was used instead to express "4" or "4 things".
