Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a company’s commitment to operate responsibly by considering its impact on people, communities, and the environment. It involves actions like reducing environmental harm, supporting local communities, and promoting ethical practices.
Our mission
Since its founding in 1975, Shinjuku Japanese Language Institute has believed that education must extend beyond the classroom. While our roots are in pioneering Japanese language education, our mission today embraces a broader responsibility: to use language as a bridge for resilience, community support, and cross-cultural understanding.
We put these values into practice through initiatives that respond to real needs. As co-founder of the JSUS program, which was awarded by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs, we have supported over 100 displaced Ukrainian students with free education and daily assistance. In partnership with Villa Education Center, we also provide free weekly lessons for refugees from Myanmar and other residents seeking stability in Japan. Beyond crisis response, we launched a scholarship for students from Palau to celebrate 30 years of Japan–Palau relations, while our students regularly join neighborhood projects, clean-ups, and cultural events that strengthen local ties.
These efforts reflect our conviction that CSR is not separate from our mission but central to it. By combining Japanese language education with social action, we strive to prepare students to become compassionate global citizens—people who master the language, engage with their communities, and contribute to a more connected and inclusive world.
Ukrainian Support
Since the start of the war, SNG has supported displaced Ukrainian students through the JSUS (Japanese Supports for University Students) program, offering free classes, daily assistance, and a safe learning environment. Awarded by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs, this initiative reflects SNG’s belief in education as a bridge between cultures.
Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, Shinjuku Japanese Language Institute (SNG) has been deeply committed to supporting displaced Ukrainian students. As a co-founder of the JSUS program (Japanese Supports for Ukrainian Students), a nationwide initiative involving over 40 Japanese language schools and several NGOs, SNG has helped Ukrainian evacuees restart their lives and studies in Japan. The program already helped over 100 Ukrainian students. Our school provides free Japanese language education for up to two years, as well as daily support that includes visa and administrative assistance, accommodation, and help with cultural integration.
Priority is given to university-aged students and recent graduates who are eager to rebuild their futures and assist others arriving later. In addition to tuition waivers, students receive support for travel expenses, living costs, and essential needs through partnerships with organizations such as Pathways Japan. SNG works closely with these groups and local governments to ensure a safe and stable learning environment.
In March 2024, SNG co-hosted a graduation and cultural exchange event celebrating the achievements of Ukrainian students in the program. The event included presentations, music performances, and a tea ceremony experience, concluding with a shared moment of solidarity as participants sang the Ukrainian national anthem. This moving occasion reflected the resilience of the students and the strength of the community built around them.
In 2023, SNG’s ongoing commitment was formally awarded by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs. More than a temporary measure, the JSUS initiative embodies SNG’s core belief that education can serve as a lasting bridge between cultures—even in times of great hardship.
Myanmar Refugee Support
In partnership with Villa Education Center, SNG offers free weekly Japanese classes to refugees from Myanmar, fostering language skills, community integration, and personal growth in a supportive setting.
As part of our ongoing commitment to supporting communities in need, Shinjuku Japanese Language Institute (SNG) has cooperated with Villa Education Center (VEC) to provide Japanese language support for people from Myanmar and other foreign residents in Japan.
Since the military coup in Myanmar in February 2021, the country has faced ongoing political unrest, violent crackdowns, and widespread displacement, forcing many citizens to flee in search of safety and stability. In response to this crisis, SNG offers free weekly Japanese language classes at our institute, creating a supportive and inclusive space where learners can regain a sense of normalcy.
Beyond language instruction, these classes aim to help participants navigate daily life in Japan, integrate into their local communities, and pursue educational or professional goals. Through this initiative, SNG hopes to empower individuals from conflict-affected regions and contribute to their long-term personal development and well-being.
Local Communities
SNG students actively take part in local projects—like gardening, clean-ups, and cultural events—with neighborhood associations. Events such as “Environment Day” raise awareness and encourage cross-cultural exchange and environmental responsibility.
As part of SNG’s strong commitment to community engagement and cultural understanding, our students actively participate in a wide range of local initiatives that foster meaningful connections with the neighborhood and beyond. These include gardening projects and collaborative events with neighborhood associations, which provide valuable opportunities for students to engage directly with local residents and students from other schools, promoting genuine cross-cultural exchange.
SNG’s commitment to environmental awareness is reflected in multiple initiatives, including the recent launch of “Environment Day.” During this event, students watch educational videos about pressing environmental issues, learn relevant vocabulary, and take part in interactive role-playing activities centered on waste sorting and recycling. The day ends with a group cleanup around the school and its surroundings, fostering both ecological mindfulness and community spirit. Additionally, students regularly participate in neighborhood clean-up drives organized in partnership with local government and community groups.
Through these diverse initiatives, SNG not only enhances students’ language skills but also nurtures their understanding of Japanese culture, community values, and civic engagement. This holistic approach prepares students to become active, socially conscious global citizens.
Palau Scholarship
To celebrate 30 years of Japan–Palau relations, SNG launched a scholarship covering tuition, housing, and materials for students from Palau. Supported by the Embassy and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the program promotes language learning and bilateral cultural exchange.
In 2024, to mark the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Palau — as well as the 30th anniversary of Palau’s independence — the school launched a dedicated scholarship program for students from Palau. Located in the western Pacific Ocean, Palau is a small island nation known for its rich marine biodiversity, traditional culture, and deep historical ties with Japan, dating back to the early 20th century. This initiative, supported by the Embassy of Palau in Tokyo and the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is designed to foster deeper cultural ties and educational exchange between the two nations.
The scholarship offers comprehensive support to the selected student, including exemption from admission fees, provision of free educational materials, full tuition coverage for one and a half years, and accommodation expenses throughout the study period. By alleviating financial barriers, the program enables students from Palau to fully immerse themselves in Japanese language studies and cultural experiences without undue stress.
Beyond financial aid, the scholarship aims to cultivate individuals who can act as cultural ambassadors and strengthen the bonds between Palau and Japan. Recipients are encouraged to engage actively in cross-cultural activities, contributing to mutual understanding and cooperation. This program reflects SNG’s strong commitment to inclusive education and international collaboration, promoting the development of global citizens who can bridge diverse cultures through language and shared experience.
