Tourism Business Class Experiences Japan’s Festival Culture at the Tori-no-Ichi Fair

On November 12, the Tourism Business Class visited the Tori-no-Ichi Fair at Hanazono Shrine in Shinjuku.

Before the visit, each group researched the history and origins of the Tori-no-Ichi, as part of a pre-study activity. This allowed students to deepen their understanding of Japanese festival culture before experiencing it firsthand.

Upon arriving at Hanazono Shrine, they were greeted by rows of colorful kumade (decorative bamboo rakes) and bustling food stalls beyond the large torii gate. The lively atmosphere and uniquely Japanese sights drew excited reactions from the students.

Some students purchased kumade and lucky charms, while others enjoyed traditional festival foods such as takoyaki, yakisoba, and baby castella. Each student spent time immersing themselves in the festive spirit in their own way.

By seeing, hearing, and tasting the festival firsthand, the students were able to gain a deeper appreciation and understanding of Japanese culture.
