Why is rain shown with an umbrella mark in Japan?

On August 26, 2025, students from our school were interviewed for NHK’s popular program “Don’t Sleep Through Life!” .
The theme of the interview was: “Why is rain represented by an umbrella mark in Japanese weather forecasts?”

During the interview, the students were asked about the differences between weather symbols in their home countries and in Japan, as well as about cultural habits surrounding umbrellas. Each student answered by sharing their own experiences.

Some mentioned that they rarely carried umbrellas back in their home countries, but started carrying them soon after arriving in Japan, saying they had quickly adapted to the “Japanese way.” Others admitted that they still haven’t gotten used to carrying one around.

A few students also said they were impressed by the umbrella stands placed in front of convenience stores and shops, describing them as one of those little moments when they felt, “Japan is so convenient.”

Although some students looked a bit nervous in front of the camera, their smiles and the way they spoke so enthusiastically left a lasting impression. We hope this experience will remain one of the bright memories of their life in Japan.
