Let’s assemble a watch ourselves!

Hiko Mizuno College of Jewelry Workshop (Watchmaking)

On Tuesday, July 15, 2025, despite the unfortunately rainy weather, a watchmaking workshop hosted by Hiko Mizuno College of Jewelry was held. This time, the theme was experiencing the assembly of a quartz watch. Students, who don’t usually get the chance to be involved in the world of “watchmaking,” gathered at the venue with slightly nervous expressions.

At first, many students seemed unsure, wondering, “Can I really do this…?” However, as the instructors from the college kindly encouraged them, their expressions gradually softened. Little by little, the nervousness gave way to excitement, which became visible on their faces.

Watchmaking turned out to be an incredibly delicate process. To prevent oil from getting on the parts, the very first step was to put on fingertip covers. Though initially puzzled by the unfamiliar gear, seeing the authentic tools and tiny parts neatly laid out in front of them naturally made the students sit up straighter and focus.

The assembly itself looked simple but was actually very challenging. Inserting tiny components into even smaller holes often led to mishaps like, “Oh no, the part I just placed fell out!” Even so, no one gave up. Listening intently to the instructors’ explanations, the students soon forgot about time and became completely absorbed in their work.

By cooperating with their peers and receiving help from the instructors, everyone was able to complete their very own watch in the end. The moment their creations were finished, their faces sparkled with childlike joy. Some students were so excited that they wanted to wear their watches home right away. One even asked worriedly, “Is this watch waterproof? Is it okay to wear it in the rain?” When the instructor replied, “It’s fine for everyday use,” the student smiled in relief and happily strapped it onto her wrist. Others carefully placed their handmade watches into boxes, treating them like precious treasures as they tucked them away in their bags.

A lot of students developed an interest in the specialized watchmaking course, eagerly tucking away the pamphlets they received from the instructors.

The more challenging it was, the greater the joy when it was completed.
The watches made in this workshop will surely become a truly special memory for the students.
